Description
Unique green tea made from the stems, leaves and twigs of shade-grown Sencha tea plants. Grown and processed in Japan where, like all Sencha grade teas, Kukicha is made by steaming the stalks before processing in order to halt fermentation. This pale green tea has the taste of fresh toasted grass. Sweeter than other green teas due to the stalks, this is completely natural. If you are concerned about caffeine this tea is very low, which makes it wonderful for any time of the day. This smooth and balanced tea has a slightly savoury, nutty aftertaste. Kukicha is traditionally harvested and processed in the fall before the tea bushes are pruned to prepare for the winter dormancy.
Sencha is commonly used in Japanese tea ceremonies marking events of personal importance. In this type of ceremony, it is the ritual that is of paramount importance as the individual is being acknowledged. This tea is also wonderful in the summer over ice.

Serving Suggestion
Liza likes this tea plain. Adam adds this tea to make smoothies or fruit juices. For iced drinks either cold brew overnight or brew as for hot, but use more tea leaves to make a more intense flavour. Try to take at least 3 brews from each scoop of leaves as the taste journey is wonderful.

Brewing for Even Lower Caffeine
This tea is already low in caffeine, but Adrian likes to brew it at 60°C for 2 minutes, followed by another 2 brews, increasing the time by 30 seconds for each subsequent brew. This results in even lower caffeine on each brew as the lower temperature will result in less caffeine extraction. The later 2 brews will also be using stems that have been partially drained of their caffeine content, so it's still low despite the slightly longer brew time.

Refreshing Verified Purchase

I was sceptical about this tea bring made from mostly twigs & not actual tea leaves! But pleasantly surprised, as it's my morning & evening brew, really light and refreshing

My favourite session brew

This is my favourite session brew, the tea I can drink all day. It's so easy to make, I can serial brew the same leaves at least three times, and the flavour is delicate and leaves no aftertaste. For a tea that intentionally doesn't have a strong impact or lingering flavour, Kukicha is perfect.
